Rio Ngumoha’s sparkling display for England on Saturday night has handed new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola plenty to consider. The 17-year-old brightened up a lacklustre warm-up fixture against New Zealand in Tampa, with the World Cup set to kick off on Thursday.

Liverpool were shaken recently following reports that Bayern Munich had registered an interest in Ngumoha. Nevertheless, the young talent pushed speculation aside to make his senior bow for England in the second half of the Three Lions’ 1-0 victory.

Ngumoha delivered an eye-catching performance on the right flank, a switch from his customary position on the opposite wing, ultimately earning the player of the match award.

While not included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the tournament, the Liverpool winger was called up for England’s final two warm-up matches before the competition commences.

Iraola was confirmed as the Reds’ new manager earlier this week after the decision to sever ties with Arne Slot. The teenager’s dazzling showing on Saturday has sent the head coach a message that he simply cannot overlook: one of the Basque’s principal priorities must be to retain Ngumoha at the club and continue his integration into the first-team setup next season.

According to The Athletic, the Bundesliga powerhouse has pinpointed Ngumoha as their top target as they seek to recruit a new left winger to provide cover for Luis Diaz, whom they acquired from the Reds last summer.

The report continues by stating that Bayern are yet to lodge a formal bid, though Ngumoha is said to be aware of the German club’s interest in securing his services. From Liverpool’s perspective, the Reds have no intention of allowing Ngumoha to depart.

The youngster, who made 31 appearances for the Reds in 2025/2026 under Slot, netting three goals and registering one assist, is simply too gifted to relinquish.

Iraola will have witnessed a taste of the youngster’s capabilities on Saturday evening, with the teenager’s unpredictable and aggressive second half display acting as a reminder to his new boss that he is a vital component of Liverpool’s future.

England star Jude Bellingham was certainly impressed with the performance. In a video posted to the national team’s social media platforms after the match, he heaped praise on Ngumoha as he presented him with his first cap.

“Congratulations on an amazing debut,” Bellingham said in the video. “I think we all enjoyed watching it, and obviously, you’re going to have a really bright future at your club and hopefully with us as well.”

While the attraction of Bayern is undoubtedly significant, Ngumoha has already expressed his affection for the Reds. In April, he told Sky Sports: “Liverpool, for me, is the biggest club in the world. To start so young and the manager having belief in all the players and me, it’s great. So, I’ve got to keep working hard and keep pushing on and just go again.”

Understanding that the winger regards Liverpool so highly should alleviate any worries over Bayern’s rumoured pursuit, but with his deal due to run until the summer of 2028, Iraola and the club’s hierarchy must guarantee the youngster envisions his future at L4.

His maiden display in an England jersey demonstrated precisely what an exceptional talent Ngumoha is, and incoming Reds manager Iraola must acknowledge it.
