  • A record high of 262,820 UK 18-year-olds have been accepted onto university or college courses this year, up three per cent on the same point last year, according to the university admissions service.
  • Overall acceptances across all age groups and domiciles also set a new record, reaching 446,690 successful applicants.
  • The increase comes amid a crisis in the number of young people not in education, employment or training (Neet).
  • Education Secretary Lucy Powell said she is focused on a “revolution” in technical and vocational pathways to answer the “clarion call” of the Neets crisis.
  • Thousands of university clearing vacancies remain available, including nearly 3,500 courses across 18 Russell Group institutions.
