Popular sandwiches found to pack ‘alarmingly high’ salt levels, study finds

How A High-Salt Diet Can Impact Your Mental Health
  • A new study by Action on Salt & Sugar reveals that many popular shop-bought sandwiches in the UK contain “alarmingly high” levels of salt.
  • The analysis of 546 products found that one in 10 exceed both salt and calorie health targets, with almost half warranting a red “high” salt warning.
  • Gail’s Smoked Chicken Caesar Club was identified as the worst offender, containing 6.88g of salt, which surpasses the recommended daily adult limit of 6g and is equivalent to nearly five McDonald’s cheeseburgers.
  • The study highlighted that sandwiches bought out-of-home are generally saltier than those from supermarkets, with several other high-street options also containing excessive salt.
  • Action on Salt & Sugar emphasised that reformulation is achievable, citing examples of lower-salt products and urged the government to implement mandatory measures to address the public health risk posed by hidden salt.
