Maggie Rogers made a jaw-dropping revelation about the time she went on a whirlwind date with a New York Times journalist, only to find out afterward that he already had a girlfriend.
The Grammy-nominated indie pop singer-songwriter, 32, put the unnamed reporter on blast during her Wednesday guest appearance on Rosalía’s Lux Tour stop at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
“A little while ago, I was single and a friend of mine said, ‘I’ve got someone for you to go on a date with,’” Rogers began during a portion of the concert which sees celebrity guests sit down in a confession booth opposite the Spanish singer and spill a secret.
The “Alaska” hitmaker remembered thinking, “Great! They’re single, they’re handsome.
“So he calls me. And he says, ‘I’ve got a vintage car. Can I come pick you up?’ So I said OK,” Rogers added, admitting that she began “falling in love a little bit” as they talked and rode around the city.
open image in gallery“Suddenly he says, ‘Oh my God. We’re actually really close to the office. Can I take you to the New York Times?’” she recalled, noting that it was 1 a.m. at the time.
“We go in and he gives me a full empty tour of the building. We make out in the conference room,” she claimed. “It’s like a really good time. He drives me home, we make out in the car.”
Once they arrived at her home, the mystery man asked if he could come up to her apartment. She declined his advances, but the next morning, she excitedly called her friends to share that she had “found someone.”
After telling them the man’s name, one of her friends said, “Oh my God. That’s my friend’s boyfriend.”
Rogers said she called to confront her date about the discovery, to which he replied, “Can I come see you? I’d really love to talk to you about it.”

It’s unclear exactly when the disastrous date occurred, but Rogers, who splits her time between Los Angeles and New York City, famously attended New York University from 2012 to 2016.
During her senior year, she was discovered by Pharrell Williams, who attended one of her master classes as a visiting artist and was immediately taken by the 15-minute demo of her song “Alaska.”
“The whole Pharrell and going viral thing is an essential part of my story,” Rogers gushed in a 2019 interview with The Independent to promote her debut album Heard It in a Past Life. “It’s how most people know me. I’d be showing up in places like France and they’d be like, ‘Tell us about Pharrell,’ but I realize that I haven’t really given people anything else to talk about yet.”
