A tiger, believed to be owned by Germany‘s “Tiger Queen” Carmen Zander, was shot dead by police after escaping its enclosure and attacking a keeper.
The incident took place on Sunday at a privately-owned facility outside Leipzig, in the eastern German state of Saxony.
A 72-year-old worker was attacked inside the enclosure and is in a stable condition in hospital, while the tiger was killed around 300 metres away.
Carmen Zander, a tiger tamer, has been banned from exhibiting her animals commercially since 2022, and authorities are now demanding more generous living conditions for her tigers.
The mayor of Schkeuditz and animal rights group PETA have called for the tigers to be removed from the facility and for stricter rules regarding privately-owned exotic animals.
