Police dismiss terrorist attack rumours at Asaba international airport

The Airport Police Command has debunked reports of a terrorist attack and security breach at the Asaba International Airport, Delta State, saying the security operation witnessed at the facility was a simulation exercise.
The clarification was contained in a statement on Monday, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Airport Police Command, ASP Mohammed Adeola.
The Command said the exercise was conducted by the Office of the National Security Adviser on Thursday, September 10, 2026, to test the preparedness and response capabilities of security and emergency-response agencies.
“The Airport Police Command wishes to clarify that there was no terrorist attack or security breach at the Asaba International Airport, contrary to reports and narratives currently circulating on social media and other platforms,” the statement said.
According to the Command, the exercise involved the deployment of security personnel and other stakeholders to recreate a simulated security incident within the airport environment.
It said the exercise was designed to test “existing response mechanisms, communication channels, command and control structures” as well as the ability of participating agencies to respond to potential security emergencies.
The clarification followed reports circulating that armed men had invaded the airport, prompting concerns among members of the public.
However, the Command described the security operation as a “controlled and authorised activity” and urged the public not to mistake it for an actual terrorist attack or invasion.
The police urged travellers and other airport users to disregard the reports and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of causing fear and panic.
“The Command reassures the public that the security situation at the airport remains under control and that all relevant security agencies remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and security of passengers, airport personnel, facilities, and other stakeholders,” the statement added.
The Command also advised members of the public to rely on information from authorised government and security agencies, saying this would support efforts to strengthen national security preparedness and protect critical airport infrastructure.
