Police arrest woman over killing of three-year-old in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a woman, Sadiat Yunusa, for allegedly killing a three-year-old girl, Ummaiyat Y., in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state over alleged jealousy arising from a prolonged domestic dispute.
The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, disclosed this on Friday in Ilorin, where he highlighted the command’s recent operational successes in tackling violent crimes across the state.
According to the police commissioner, detectives commenced investigation into the case on July 25 after receiving a report at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters that the three-year-old had been killed under suspicious circumstances.
Adekimi said, “On July 25, 2026, detectives commenced investigation into the tragic killing of Ummaiyat Y, a three-year-old girl, following a report received at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters.”
“Preliminary findings established that the victim had been left in the care of a family member while her mother went to the Kaiama Central Market. During that period, the suspect, Sadiat Yunusa, allegedly lured the child away to a nearby farm settlement, where she unlawfully caused her death by strangulation.”
The CP said prompt investigation led to the suspect’s arrest, adding that she allegedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
“Prompt investigative efforts led to the arrest of the suspect, who, during interrogation, voluntarily confessed to the commission of the offence,” Adekimi stated.
He further alleged that the suspect told investigators she committed the act out of resentment and jealousy linked to her husband’s relationship with his second wife.
“She disclosed that the act was motivated by resentment and jealousy arising from a prolonged domestic dispute, alleging that her husband had neglected her and her three children in favour of his second wife,” he added.
The police commissioner said the suspect had been charged to court, assuring residents that the command would continue to ensure thorough investigation and prosecution of criminal cases across the state.
