Plateau tragedy: IG deploys AIG, orders security reinforcement

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Tuesday, deployed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, Makurdi, AIG Dankombo Morris, to Plateau State following the recent deadly attack on Kawel community in Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area.
The attack had claimed the lives of no fewer than 20 villagers.
The deployment is part of immediate measures to assess the security situation on the ground and implement strategies to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
The IGP also approved the deployment of additional police personnel and operational assets, including Police Mobile Force units and tactical teams, to reinforce security presence in the affected communities.
During a visit to Bokkos on Tuesday, AIG Morris, accompanied by members of the state police command management team, held strategic meetings with local government officials, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to coordinate the response.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesman for the state police command, Alabo Alfred, after the visit confirmed the development.
The statement read, “Following the unfortunate incident in Kawel Community in Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 4 Headquarters, Makurdi, AIG Dankombo F. Morris, to Plateau State for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and to put in place necessary measures aimed at restoring peace and preventing any further occurrence.
“The AIG, accompanied by members of the Plateau State Police Command’s Management Team, today visited Bokkos Local Government Area, where he held engagements with the leadership of the Local Government, the traditional chief of the area, and other critical stakeholders.
“During the meeting, the Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Amalau Samuel Amalau, welcomed the Assistant Inspector General of Police and his entourage.
“He expressed appreciation to the Inspector General of Police for his swift response and intervention in the wake of the incident.
“Amalau described the attack as a tragic and unfortunate act of pure criminality, noting that it was unprovoked.
“He informed the delegation that the victims had already been buried the previous day.
“He, however, appealed for the deployment of additional security assets and manpower to Bokkos Local Government Area to complement the ongoing efforts of the police and other security agencies in securing lives and property in the general area,” the statement read.
President, Women in Politics Initiative, Plateau State chapter, Mrs Hajara Yunana, expressed the concerns and challenges faced by women in Bokkos LGA following the incident.
She appreciated the efforts and assurances of the police leadership, while appealing that the commitments made should translate into concrete actions beyond mere promises.
“She further called on the Inspector General of Police to leverage modern policing technologies in strengthening security around the affected communities and other vulnerable areas within the LGA.
“She urged the women of Bokkos to remain resilient, calm, and confident in the capacity of the police and other security agencies to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice,” the statement quoted Yunana as saying.
Morris conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the Inspector General of Police to the Governor of Plateau State, and the people of Bokkos LGA, particularly residents of Kawel community, Mushere District, over the unfortunate incident.
He stated that the IGP had deployed additional manpower and operational assets, which include units of PMF/tactical team personnel, to the affected area to strengthen security presence, restore confidence, protect vulnerable communities, and prevent any further occurrence.
The AIG called on community leaders, youth groups, and residents to remain calm, support security agencies, and continue to provide useful, timely and accurate information that will assist ongoing efforts to maintain peace and bring the perpetrators to justice.
