Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared an update on the search for Nancy Guthrie, four months after her disappearance.

“These cases are difficult,” Nanos told local Tucson, Arizona outlet KOLD News 13 on Monday, June 1. “Not just this case. A number of our cases come to us where it requires a lot of work from other people. It’s not just a detective who goes out there, talks to somebody, and we can make an arrest.”

Nanos noted that the search for Today anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mom is a “sensitive case,” seemingly alluding to its public nature.

“What really makes it prolonged is we do rely on labs,” he added. “You don’t want to jeopardize not just the integrity of this case, but the integrity of DNA as a supplement to law enforcement work.”

Nanos explained that both digital labs and DNA testing protocols are in place for these situations. He made it clear that “nobody wants to arrest the wrong person” for a crime of this nature.

News broke on February 1 that Nancy had gone missing from her Arizona home. Savannah, 54, took a months-long leave from her role at Today, returning to the news desk in April.

Details continue to emerge amid Nancy’s disappearance, but a suspect has not yet been taken into custody.

When the investigation hit the 100-day mark last month, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Us Weekly that the search for Nancy is “an active and ongoing investigation,” noting that they are working closely with the FBI.

“DNA and video analysis are underway, supported by laboratories across the country,” the statement added. “Advances in technology are aiding investigative efforts, and tips continue to be received and reviewed.”

Savannah has also continued to share tributes to her missing mother via social media.

“Mother, daughter, sister, Nonie, we miss you with every breath,” Savannah captioned an Instagram post when celebrating Mother’s Day on May 10. “We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you.”

She added, “We need help. Someone knows something that can make the difference. Call 1800CALLFBI. You can be anonymous and the reward remains available. Please keep praying. Bring her home.”

Nanos told People last month that he’s not “personally” in touch with the Guthrie family despite leading the hunt for Nancy.

“If they need the family for anything, they get in touch with them and the family,” he said. “It works both ways.”
