Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday, hosted the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, along with senior British diplomatic officials for talks on current affairs in the country.
Atiku’s aide, Kenneth Okonkwo, disclosed the engagement in a post on his X handle, saying the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate met “Montgomery, Head of Political Section, Lucy Green, and Second Secretary Political, Thomas Simpson.”
Okonkwo added that discussions focused on “current affairs in Nigeria” but did not disclose further details of the engagement or where it took place.
Pictures and video footage from the meeting show Atiku, dressed in traditional attire, exchanging greetings and handshakes with the visiting diplomats in a formal setting featuring Nigerian flags.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of the British High Commission’s engagements with Nigerian political leaders and electoral officials ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an April 2026, statement posted on its X handle, the UK High Commission said Montgomery and Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever had visited political leaders and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The Commission said it looked forward to working with all political parties to support “inclusive & credible elections.”
The officials visited Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu and 2023 presidential candidates Atiku and Peter Obi, as well as the chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan.
The visits were focused on developments in Nigeria’s political and democratic processes.
