Jon Rahm had begun to doubt himself upon hearing the pre-tournament predictions ahead of the PGA Championship, yet the demanding examination posed by Aronimink Golf Club has vindicated his initial assessment.
For his own peace of mind, Rahm is grateful that Aronimink has proved every bit as challenging as he had anticipated. Speaking after a three-under-par 67, he said: “I would like to know who came up with that, by the way.
“Honestly, when I heard people talking about 20 under par, it made me question my ability to read a golf course. I was looking at the greens and where they could put pin locations and possible wind, (and) I actually got worried. I’m like if somebody shoots 20 under, the amount of records they’re going to break this week would be unheard of.
“The fairways up here by the numbers are probably wide, but they don’t play as wide as they really are. Holes like 7, 10, 15, with how much slope you have to the fairway, you have to hit a very accurate golf shot to be in it. Like that, you can add too 2, 4 – maybe not on 6 – but 10, 12, 15, 16, right?
“With the slope of the fairway and the wind going with the slope of the fairway, it plays a lot more difficult than I think a lot of people would have foreseen at first with how much they’re rolling out.”

Shane Lowry is the latest golf star to hit out at the setup for the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club.
He told the BBC: “I think it is a great golf course, but I think it has been set up poorly. I guess people sitting at home can say ‘well people are making birdies and shooting good scores’ but that’s always going to happen with the best players in the world. I was happy to hear Rory [McIlroy and Scottie [Scheffler’s] comments yesterday because it wasn’t just me feeling it out there.
“I feel like you when you see the best players in the world struggling from 10-feet, you know there is something wrong somewhere. I think they got it wrong on the first two days, it was certainly a little bit easier today and it looks like that was maybe a reaction to the first two days, which is not right either
“We won’t to play a similar set up every day. You want to play a golf course that gets harder as the week goes on especially in these major championships. You look at the field, [and it is] so bunched, maybe that’s the reason for the set up the way it is.”

Rory McIlroy backtracked on his previous complaints about the conditions at Aronimink after he recorded an impressive six birdies en route to a four-under-par 66 to put himself back in contention for the US PGA Championship.
Speaking after the third round, McIlroy made somewhat of a U-turn on his previous complaints and said: “Look when you have a set of greens like this you can start to frustrate people a little easier I think. You heard it in me last night, you heard it in Scottie [Scheffler].
“I saw some of his comments. I think there was a lot of guys that were frustrated yesterday coming off the course, but again, it’s frustrating to us, but at the same time it creates a hell of an entertaining championship. If I wasn’t playing this tournament I’d love what’s going on this week, but watching and playing are two different things.”
