Petar Musa lifts FC Dallas over SKC with stoppage-time PK

Petar Musa’s penalty kick seven minutes into second-half stoppage time gave FC Dallas a dramatic 4-3 home victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.

One minute into extra time, SKC defender Moises Mosquera fouled Musa right on the edge of the box. Dallas was initially awarded a free kick, but the call was upgraded to a penalty kick after a lengthy video review.

The goal was Musa’s second of the match, giving the star forward 18 goals to tie Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi for the MLS lead as they battle for the MLS Golden Boot.

Logan Farrington and Kaick also scored for FC Dallas (10-6-7, 37 points), who strengthened their hold on a Western Conference playoff berth. The Toros have been outscored 14-11 in their last four matches but have still managed a 2-1-1 record.

Saturday marked FC Dallas’ first match at Toyota Stadium since May 13, due to renovations.

Taylor Calheira had a brace and Stephen Afrifa scored SKC’s other goal, as Kansas City (4-16-3, 15 points) first took an early 2-0 lead and then equalized on Calheira’s second goal in the 78th minute.

The loss extended Kansas City’s winless drought to seven matches (1-6-0), and the club remains in last place in the MLS standings.

Just four minutes into the match, Capita’s initial shot was stopped by Dallas goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois, but Calheira was in position to bury the rebound.

Afrifa capitalized on a gift from FC Dallas midfielder Ramiro in the 20th minute. Ramiro was very slow in making a clearance pass, and Afrifa made a quick move to step in and chip the ball into the open net.

While Sporting Kansas City dominated the opening 26 minutes, FC Dallas quickly equalized on their first two chances of the match. Farrington struck in the 27th minute, and Musa followed three minutes later when he headed in an excellent cross into the box from Bernard Kamungo.

Kaick gave Dallas the lead in the 45th minute on a booming shot from outside the penalty arc.

Calheira’s second goal in 15 career MLS matches came 74 minutes after his first, as he headed in a perfectly-placed cross into the box from Emir Karic.
