PC Harper’s killers won’t walk free early, minister suggests
- “A solution has been identified” to stop PC Andrew Harper’s killers from walking free from prison early, housing minister Sally Jameson has suggested.
- Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers, who were sentenced to 13 years for manslaughter in 2020 following PC Harper’s death in 2019, are currently due for early release in January.
- Downing Street previously said that it was not possible to exclude individual offenders, but said it was reviewing options following public outcry and a petition signed by over 880,000 people.
- The early release scheme, part of measures to tackle prison overcrowding, currently excludes those convicted of rape, serious child sex offences, and grooming.
- Offenders set for early release under the sentencing changes will face strict probation conditions, including electronic monitoring and random drug testing.
