Osun poll: Rector urges students to shun political thuggery

The Rector of The Polytechnic, Iresi, Osun State, Azeez Adewoyin, has warned youths and students in the state to resist being used as tools for political violence and destabilisation of the state.
Adewoyin gave the warning at an event organised to commemorate International Day of Youth in Diplomacy held on the campus of the polytechnic in Iresi.
In a statement signed by Akeem Ajao, the Head of Mass Communication Department and Strategic Studies of the polytechnic obtained in Osogbo on Tuesday, Adewoyin urged youths in the state to work hard for a promising future and shun acts that may destroy their potentials.
“My advice for the youth in this political period is for them to be conscious of their future. They should not allow any politician to use them for inordinate ambition.
“If any politicians call them for inordinate ambition, they should ask for the children of those politicians. Many of them have their children in the developed world, and they are leaving Nigeria undeveloped.
“They are not catering for education. They are not catering for health. They are not catering for infrastructural development. It is only when elections are around, they want cheap labor who they will use to achieve their selfish aim,” Adewoyin said.
Speaking on the essence of the Diplomatic Day, HOD Mass Communication Department and Strategic Studies, Ajao said the program was designed to showcase the unity in global diversity.
He stressed that, “We are living in a global world whereby we can have access to different cultures, and we believe that this diplomatic day we are doing. Our aim and objective is to unite the whole world and to portray them in a way that will improve and enrich their cultural value. That is why we believe that, okay, let us come up with this kind of initiative.”
Discussing the theme of the celebrations, ‘Cultural Diversification in Global World,’ the guest speaker, Dr Jimoh Olorede, explained that global diversity should be seen as an opportunity for inter-cultural cooperation and peaceful coexistence.
Reacting to the recent attacks on foreigners in South Africa, Olorede urged Nigerians not to retaliate against the South Africans, saying
“They say that two wrongs do not make a right. Two wrongs do not make a Right.
“Nigerians should not reciprocate even with evil. If South Africans have chosen to take the path of evil, we should choose the path of righteousness. We should try to correct them with our moral values, with our virtues. We should, of course, tolerate them; we should not allow our diversity to divide us.”
