Residents in Newmains will have to contend with major roadworks throughout the summer.

SGN are investing £1.7 million to upgrade the gas network in Newmains to ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.

The project involves replacing old metal mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new plastic pipe which has a lifespan of around 80 years.

This will help ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.

Phase one of the project runs until Friday, June 12, two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place in Morningside Road, between its junction with Mill Road and just south of its junction with Chapel Road.

Phase two involves three-way temporary traffic lights will be in the A71 Overtown Road. The lights will affect a 300-metre stretch south from Cooper’s Roundabout.

From Monday, June 1, until Friday, June 12, temporary three-way traffic lights will be in the A73 Main Street. These rolling lights will move from Cooper’s Roundabout up to the Asda superstore.

From Monday, June 29, until Wednesday, September 16, temporary four-way traffic lights will be in place at Newmains Roundabout affecting all streets accessing the roundabout including A73 Main Street, Morningside Road, and Manse Road.

During this phase a road closure will be in place on Bonkle Road and no access directly onto the roundabout will be available.

All vehicular traffic will follow a signed diversion route. Local residents within Bonkle Road will have access available to their streets.

From Monday, June 29, until Friday, September 18, two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place in Bonkle Road between Douglas Crecent and Alcath Road.

From Monday, July 20, until Friday, August 20, two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place in Westwood Road between Newmains Roundabout and Murdouston View.

A SGN spokesperson said: “We would like to thank everyone in the community for your understanding and support as we work to improve the energy infrastructure in Newmains.”
