New plan could see UK rejoin EU single market in return for defence

  • A new post-Brexit proposal has reportedly been presented to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, suggesting that Britain could rejoin the EU’s single market.
  • The plan proposes that Britain extends its Armed Forces and nuclear deterrent protection across Europe.
  • In exchange, Britain would gain access to the EU’s free-trade zone without accepting freedom of movement or joining the Euro.
  • Former Tory MP Nick Boles developed the proposal, which reportedly includes creating a ‘European Confederation’ with other non-EU countries.
  • While Mr Burnham aims to consolidate existing UK-EU relations, a minister said that rejoining the EU is not currently on the agenda.
