New Girl fans have been dealt a blow after show creator Liz Meriwether has said there are “no scripts” for a reunion.
Her comments come after Max Greenfield, who played insecure playboy Schmidt on the hit Fox series, claimed a reunion was happening.
“I don’t even have the scripts written for the things that I need to have scripts written for,” she told Variety, who is currently adapting Britney Spears’s memoir The Woman in Me for the big screen.
New Girl originally aired between September 2011 until May 2018 and followed quirky teacher Jess (Zooey Deschanel) who moves into a Los Angeles loft with three men – Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Greenfield) and Winston (Larmorne Morris) – after a breakup.
The series received critical acclaim and was a ratings hit, too, drawing 10 million viewers in the US with its pilot episode.
Since the final episode aired, fans have been petitioning for a reunion, and had their hopes raised earlier this month after Greenfield appeared on The Today Show.
“I’m not gonna play the game,” he said. “As far as I know, it’s happening.”
open image in gallery“Liz was very concerned,” he continued, addressing the frenzy the writer caused after suggesting a reunion would be “exciting”.
“She texted us, she was like, ‘I said these things in the press.’ And she was like, ‘I don’t know if there’s any more stories to tell.’”
But, Greenfield continued, he had “seen scripts. She’s written them. They’re amazing. She’s a very talented writer.”

At the time, she responded to Greenfield’s comments on Instagram with a video in which she joked: “Max told everybody that there’s amazing scripts of a New Girl reunion that I’ve written.
“Um, and just an update on that, the scripts were pretty good until everybody just started giving me notes on every little thing.”
However, she told Variety: “I’ve honestly been enjoying this thing, whatever this is, that’s like this back and forth between the cast and me, and I think this is the show and I feel like maybe in the world of the internet… maybe the show is just this, these little videos, maybe that’s the reunion. I don’t know.”
Greenfield clarified his remarks with the publication, joking that he was confused because the cast, including Deschanel, Johnson, Morris and Hannah Simone, who played Cece, will reunite to receive the Rising Phoenix award at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles on 10 October.
