New Anambra CP assumes duty, pledges safe, secure environment

The new Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Nanna Ama, on Monday, officially assumed duty as the 36th Commissioner of Police of the Anambra State Police Command, following a strategic redeployment approved by the Police Service Commission and Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu.
The posting of Ama follows the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
A press statement issued by the Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Monday, indicated that Ama, before his deployment to Anambra State, had served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja, having previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same office.
Ikenga added that the new CP has expressed his commitment to consolidating the existing security gains in Anambra State and strengthening collaboration among the Police, other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
The statement read, “The Anambra State Police Command today, August 10, 2026, announces the assumption of duty of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, as the new Commissioner of Police in the State. CP Nnanna Oji Ama takes over the leadership of the Command following the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
“The new Commissioner of Police is a highly experienced and accomplished senior police officer with over three decades of distinguished service in the Nigeria Police Force. Prior to his deployment to Anambra State, he served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja, having previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same office.
“A native of Ekata in Edda LGA of Ebonyi State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos. He commenced his police career as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, before embarking on a wide-ranging career spanning intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
“His previous appointments include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding Officer, No. 11 PMF, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the FCT; Coordinator of Courses, Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 PMF, Uyo;Divisional Crime Officer, Sango Otta, Ogun State, and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among other strategic posts.”
The statement added, “The new Commissioner has also undergone several professional and strategic training programmes both within and outside the country, including Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at NIPSS, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
“CP Nnanna Oji Ama has been recognised for his professional courage and operational effectiveness, including a Commendation Award for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.”
According to the statement, the new CP is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association, and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
“Upon assumption of office, CP Nnanna Oji Ama expressed his commitment to consolidating the existing security gains in Anambra State and strengthening collaboration among the Police, other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
“The CP further assured the people of Anambra State of the Command’s renewed determination to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, uphold the rule of law, and ensure a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and businesses across the state,” the statement added. .
