Elon Musk, serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and senior adviser, implemented program cuts and widespread layoffs during his time in the White House.
New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman stated that Musk’s role, described as a de facto co-president, “created so much destabilization” within the government.
Musk’s tenure was marked by chaotic policies and decisions, including attempts to cut over $100 million in grants and access sensitive data, which are still under scrutiny.
Federal judges have since ruled that some of Musk’s grant cuts are unconstitutional and allowed lawsuits over DOGE’s access to sensitive data to proceed.
His actions led to federal employees losing jobs, with some later reinstated, and prompted departments like the IRS to bolster hiring efforts.
