Police rushed to Munich Airport and the runways were closed for several hours this morning after reports of a suspected drone near the site.

All flights were grounded, news sites in Germany reported, with nothing operating on either runway. Federal Police said they were on site after a potentially unauthorised “flying object” was spotted.

At 10.05am police said their search had found nothing and the airport has now fully reopened although there have been dozens of cancelled or delayed flights.

Delays are still in place of around an hour for many scheduled flights.

According to Flight Radar, which tracks live flights, Munich Airport currently has an average delay time of 50 minutes, affecting an estimated 120 flights.

In a post on X, it said Munich Airport is currently “our most disrupted airport with 33 cancelled flights and 124 delays so far, averaging nearly an hour”.

Several scheduled flights departing from Munich Airport show delays between 9.30am to 10am.

Many that were scheduled to fly after 9.30am were delayed to 10.05am or later, including a flight to Milan, Budapest, Paris and Corfu.

Other flights are still yet to depart with delays anticipated. One flight to Frankfurt, set to depart at 11am, has been cancelled.

At around 9am, Munich Airport came to a total standstill with no flights able to operate after reports of a “suspicious observation”.

Federal Police said a potentially unauthorised flying object was spotted in the vicinity of the runway.

At around 10.05am, BILD reports the all-clear was given.

“The search by the Federal Police revealed no suspicious findings,” a spokesperson told the outlet

Passengers on board one plane were informed via an announcement before takeoff that the airport was suddenly closed, Greman site FOCUS reports.

The outlet states passengers were told the airport would remain shut until “at least 10am” with a helicopter on site in search of the drone.

Several police officers are said to be on the site of Munich Airport, searching the grounds and checking for clues regarding the suspected drone.

A helicopter has also been deployed, reports BILD.

The incident has temporarily suspended all flights from the airport.

According to a Munich Federal Police spokesman, the airport has closed today after reports of a ‘drone’ in the vicinity.

Stefan Bayer said pilots “made a suspicious observation” at around 9am. He says a potentially unauthorised flying object was seen near the airport, citing that it could have been a drone, reports BILD.
