A mum answered a seven-word message with the fateful response “come up x” – and moments later she was brutally murdered.
Samantha Watson, 56m was killed by Adam Watson, who she had met a number of times before. Watson fled the country after the September 2022 murder before he was arrested in Belgium.
Channel 4’s The Digital Detectives revisits the murder of Samantha Holden, 56, who was discovered dead at her flat in Farnborough, Hampshire, after she was suffocated and strangled.
The episode, which aired on Thursday, July 30, examines how detectives utilised digital evidence to construct the case against Watson after he fled the UK in the wake of the killing. Ms Holden, a sex worker, died at her home on September 9, 2022.
The programme reveals how mobile phone data assisted investigators in tracing Watson’s whereabouts and his communications with Ms Holden in the hours leading up to her death.
Shortly before the fatal assault, Watson sent Ms Holden a message at 12.44pm stating: “Joanna I am 30 seconds from your door x.” She responded moments later: “Come up x”, reports the Mirror.

Shedding light on the importance of the messages, higher analyst Elaine Lucas says in The Digital Detectives: “When we download the data from Watson’s phone, we found texts between Sam and Watson on the day of her death.
“Watson doesn’t refer to Sam by her name, he calls her Joanna. Digital media confirmed that, despite his ‘no comment’, he was the client. Sam had seen Adam Watson before, on at least three occasions.
“So the text messages suggest that he was arranging to go to Sam’s that day.”
Following her murder, Watson fled to Belgium, where he was apprehended at a hotel two days later before being extradited back to the UK.
Ruth Sands, Senior Crown Prosecutor with CPS Wessex, highlighted Watson’s attempt to flee after committing the murder:
“Adam Watson is a cold-blooded killer who attempted to evade justice by fleeing the country, whilst his victim still lay undiscovered… I want to pay tribute to the strength of Samantha’s family.
“They have experienced things no family should, and I hope that this sentence can begin to close this awful chapter for them.”
The court was told that Ms Holden’s body was discovered by her 18 year old son shortly after 4pm. She was found lying on the floor, draped in a blue dressing gown, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Watson’s DNA was subsequently recovered from her neck and beneath her fingernails.
Throughout his trial, jurors learned that Watson had first made contact with Ms Holden via an adult website in May 2022, where she advertised under the name “English blonde lady”. The pair had met on several occasions beforehand, leading the judge to determine that Ms Holden had placed her trust in him.
Following the killing, Watson discarded Ms Holden’s mobile phone at St Pancras station before boarding a Eurostar service to Belgium.
At Winchester Crown Court in 2024, Watson, then aged 37, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years.
In a devastating victim impact statement, Ms Holden’s daughter, Rebecca Elliott, described her mother as her “best friend, my soul mate and most importantly my mum”.

The court additionally heard during sentencing that Watson had a history of violent offending. He was on extended licence having served a sentence for sexually assaulting another woman in 2013, after admitting the offence.
It was also revealed he had previously faced charges of wounding members of his own family in 2008.
