Mr Kipling is a brand that has delighted foodies for years, with shoppers often rushing to supermarkets to try and sample the amazing sweet treats on offer. However, fans of the food company are only just realising what’s been deemed the “devastating story” behind the brand that’s been feeding people for decades.
The topic was recently brought up on Reddit when somebody discovered the true story behind the baking legend. While we may be used to seeing the brand’s products on supermarket shelves, it turns out there’s one thing about Mr Kipling that many people didn’t know, and it’s left some pretty heartbroken.
It’s not the only story to be exposed about the brand either. Years ago, employees also spilled secrets on what it’s really like to make cakes for the company.
The social media user wrote: “Just found out that Mr Kipling was never a real person. Slightly saddened by this. Anyway; just in case other people are as silly as me: Mr Kipling is only a brand name.”
The post got a lot of people talking, and several chimed in with their views. Many seemed devastated by the confectionary news.
One person quipped: “Exceedingly bad news.” Another added: “The Santa Claus of little cakes and pies.”
A third replied: “Oh. That saddens me.” Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “Feels like this needs a spoiler for those of us not ready for this knowledge.”
Someone else also wrote: “This can’t be true. This is a terrible time to be literate.” One more also added: “No way!”
While it’s no secret that Mr Kipling has many fans across the country, they were puzzled to discover this piece of trivia. We really do learn something new every day, don’t we?
Little you may know, Mr Kipling is not, and was never, a real person. It’s simply a brand of cakes, pies and baked goods.
It was introduced back in May 1967, with the aim of selling cakes of a local baker’s standard to supermarkets. It went on to become the United Kingdom’s largest cake manufacturer by 1976.
According to reports, the brand was created in the 1960s by Rank Hovis McDougall, with the intention of boosting cake sales and making use of a new bakery. The name, Mr Kipling, was developed for marketing purposes.
Most people know the brand’s slogan thanks to its famous adverts, where it was claimed it made “exceedingly good cakes”. Such adverts originally featured the voice of actor James Hayter.
Mr Kipling has continued to be a popular brand for decades, with shoppers still keen to stock up on its selection of cakes and bakes.

Since launching, varieties of single-serving and individually wrapped cakes have also been marketed. Even so, it’s taken until now for some people to realise Mr Kipling actually never existed himself.
