Minimally-invasive prostate cancer treatment used by Jeremy Clarkson has fewer side effects
- A new study has revealed that minimally-invasive focal therapy for prostate cancer, a treatment used by Jeremy Clarkson and Lord David Cameron, offers comparable effectiveness to traditional radiotherapy and prostatectomy surgery.
- Research from Imperial College London, published in European Urology, found that only two out of nearly 3,500 men died from prostate cancer a decade after undergoing focal therapy, demonstrating excellent long-term cancer control similar to conventional treatments.
- The innovative approach specifically targets and destroys only cancerous tissue, resulting in a five-fold lower risk of severe side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and rectal problems compared to traditional methods.
- Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with an estimated 15,000 cases annually being suitable for focal therapy, representing 50-66 per cent of localised diagnoses.
- The UK Government recently announced extra funding to expand the provision of focal therapy, as currently only about 1,000 men per year receive the treatment despite its suitability for a much larger patient group.
