Manchester United have the opportunity to swoop for Robert Lewandowski and solve a weakness within their squad this summer. The seasoned frontman is set to leave Barcelona, handing Michael Carrick’s side a golden chance to tempt him to Old Trafford.

The 37-year-old continues to be a prolific goalscorer, despite having slipped down the pecking order at the Camp Nou. He found the net 14 times as the Catalan club clinched the La Liga title, chalking up a goal every 118 minutes in the league.

ESPN have reported that Lewandowski turned down a fresh Barcelona contract on reduced terms after losing his starting spot in Hansi Flick’s side. It is claimed that the striker has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, as well as from Saudi Arabia and the USA, though he is yet to settle on his next move. One thing remains beyond doubt: he will not be playing for Barcelona next season.

The uncertainty surrounding Lewandowski’s future gives United the chance to land a high-profile free transfer. Having flourished in both Germany and Spain, the veteran has yet to pit his wits against English football and a move to United could prove an enticing proposition.

Signing a new striker is not United’s main priority, with midfield reinforcements being top of their list. However, a world-class forward available on a free transfer should never be ignored, particularly as United gear up for a return to Champions League football.

Michael Carrick’s side have enjoyed the luxury of no European commitments this season but the upcoming campaign will place greater demands on the squad. Young striker Benjamin Sesko has caught the eye during the interim manager’s tenure, yet is still working to cement his place and improve his game.

Both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are capable of leading the attack but Lewandowski would bring an entirely different dimension to the United team. He has been an elite centre-forward for well over a decade and could impart his goalscoring wisdom to Sesko and other members of the squad.

It is a blueprint United have followed on several occasions in recent years. Zlatan Ibrahimovic made an immediate impact, Edinson Cavani became a firm fan favourite and Cristiano Ronaldo scored 27 goals in 54 appearances before his second stint at the club drew to a close.

Lewandowski’s eye for goal remains as sharp. The Polish striker would likely relish the chance to prove himself in England, even in a rotational role, while United’s forward line could reap the rewards of his vast experience at the very highest level.

During his four years at Barcelona, Lewandowski claimed La Liga on three occasions. Moreover, since 2010, he has amassed an extraordinary 13 league titles across his spells at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and the Catalan club.
