Mexico City authorities have announced an alcohol sales ban in several areas ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup match between Mexico and the Czech Republic.
The prohibition will be in effect from 3 p.m. on Wednesday until 7 a.m. on Thursday, targeting convenience stores, grocery shops, and supermarkets, while exempting bars and restaurants.
The ban covers an extensive zone including the historic downtown, the popular Zona Rosa entertainment hub, and Reforma Avenue, where supporters traditionally gather at the Angel of Independence monument.
This decision comes after over 700,000 people flooded the city center last week to celebrate Mexico’s triumph over South Korea, leading to widespread public drinking and approximately 40 metric tons of waste collected.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has encouraged fans to gather in free public watch parties set up by local governments and FIFA, emphasizing fun without excessive alcohol consumption.
