Former FC Porto defender, Ricardo Costa, has defended Cristiano Ronaldo’s position in the Portugal national team.
Costa insisted that Ronaldo should be recognized for competing at the highest level during the 2026 World Cup tournament.
Speaking to Portuguese outlet, O Jogo, the former Portugal international noted that Ronaldo’s eternal rival Lionel Messi failed to perform against Spain in the World Cup final as Argentina lost 1-0.
“I think we should acknowledge Cristiano Ronaldo’s merit for continuing to compete at the highest level,” Costa said.
“The coach made the decisions he considered most appropriate for the team.
“If Portugal had progressed to the final, these choices probably would not be so widely discussed.
“Messi didn’t show up in the final against Spain either, and nobody talks much about that.”
