Michael Carrick is set to see plenty of incomings and outgoings in his Manchester United squad this summer. The Red Devils boss is gearing up for his first transfer window as permament manager with the club preparing for their return to the Champions League.

United are poised to make Atalanta midfielder Ederson their first summer signing in a £38million deal. More signings are expected to arrive at Old Trafford with several outgoings potentially in the work, including Marcus Rashford.

One player who has already left Manchester is Casemiro after he put an end to his four-year spell at the club prior to their last game of the season. The Brazilian’s absence, both on the pitch and in the dressing room, will certainly be felt and has been described as a “headache” for Carrick to deal with. Mirror Football takes a look into the weekend’s latest headlines regarding United.

Bolstering United’s midfield ranks is a high priority for Carrick, especially after the departure of Casemiro. The 34-year-old’s powerful presence and goal-scoring had a huge impact on United’s success this season with Edwin van de Sar stating just how much the club will miss him.

The former United hero admitted the challenge to replace Casemiro will prove to be a “headache” for Carrick as he explained: “Some players will want to leave or extend their contracts.

“The big thing is Casemiro leaving, which will leave them a big gap in midfield. I think the last year and a half, the appreciation for him and his career has been immense, so that will be a headache.

“Goal scoring-wise, with the addition of Mbeumo, Cunha, and Sesko, they have a little more grit, a little bit more stability, a little bit older players and in the past, they went for some young players.

“I think they will do that again this summer, they will look at the Premier League to see which players are available to fill the gaps to make sure that the level of Man United goes up every year.”

It was less than two months ago when Harry Maguire signed a one-year contract with the Red Devils to put an end to speculation over his future. The deal, which features an option for United to extend it by a further year, was awarded to the 33-year-old over his stunning form that saw United rise up the table under Michael Carrick.

Maguire featured in all but two of Carrick’s 17 games in charge with United finishing third and clinching their return to the Champions League next season. But with the ink barely dry on the contract, Maguire’s future still seemingly remains up in the air.
