A man has been charged with the murder of a young Irish woman in the Australian city of Melbourne.

Local police said emergency services were called to a house on Ferntree Gully Road on Friday morning, where the woman was found badly injured.

She was unable to be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was reportedly a mother of three.

In a statement, police said that a man was arrested nearby by Homicide Squad detectives and taken into custody. He was later charged with murder.

The 45-year-old, of Ferntree Gully, appeared before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via videolink.

He will reappear in court on 23 February 2027.

It is understood that he and the 30-year-old woman knew each other.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
