  • A major incident has been declared on the Suffolk coast as firefighters battle a substantial heathland blaze at Dunwich Heath, near Leiston.
  • The Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was mobilised shortly after 5.30pm on Wednesday.
  • The inferno is spreading south-west, threatening St James’ Church, and the public has been urged to avoid the area and keep windows and doors shut by Dan Davis, a station manager for the service.
  • The incident was confirmed as “major” because of “the size and complexity” of the rapidly developing situation, occurring amidst an amber heat health alert for the East of England.
  • Separately, firefighters in Scotland are making “significant progress” in tackling a wildfire in the Cairngorms that broke out two weeks ago.
