Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has announced his forced retirement from professional football due to a severe shoulder injury, effective when his contract with Celtic expires in June.
The 39-year-old, who has been sidelined since February and underwent two surgeries, stated that the decision was made for him by medical experts who advised against his return to top-level football.
Schmeichel was a pivotal figure in Leicester City’s unexpected Premier League title win in 2016 and earned 120 caps for Denmark, participating in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
His final competitive appearance was for Celtic in a 2-1 home defeat by Hibernian, and his last international match was a World Cup qualifier against Scotland.
While expressing frustration at not being able to end his career on his own terms, Schmeichel conveyed immense gratitude for his achievements, the clubs he played for, and the experiences gained through football.
