Leaders of UK’s devolved nations pressure No 10 to hold fresh independence referendums
- The leaders of the SNP, Plaid Cymru and Sinn Féin have signed a joint memorandum of understanding in Cardiff declaring that Westminster‘s dominance is coming to an end.
- SNP leader John Swinney, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Sinn Féin leaders Michelle O’Neill and Mary Lou McDonald called on the British Government to prepare for and facilitate constitutional change.
- The agreement highlights that, for the first time, First Ministers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all committed to independence from the United Kingdom.
- The joint statement outlines plans to reject Whitehall’s economic model, share ideas on growth and energy, and reasserts that the future of their nations belongs in the European Union.
- Mr Swinney declared that Andy Burnham will be the final prime minister of the United Kingdom, and predicted Scots would choose to exit the union if another independence referendum takes place.
