The Lagos State Government has warned manufacturers, importers, distributors and other businesses against making undisclosed changes to consumer products, saying offenders will face regulatory sanctions.
The government directed businesses operating in the state to disclose any material changes to their products, including alterations to brands, packaging, labelling, formulation, ingredients, weight, size, quality and other product specifications.
A statement by the Lagos State government said the directive was issued by the General Managerand Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, as part of the state government’s renewed efforts to protect consumers, promote transparency and curb deceptive trade practices.
Solebo said LASCOPA would intensify market surveillance and enforcement to ensure businesses comply with the directive.
He warned that companies found to have made undisclosed changes to their products would be sanctioned in line with the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law and other applicable regulations.
“The right of every consumer to accurate, clear, and sufficient product information is non-negotiable. Manufacturers and businesses must understand that any unannounced alterations capable of misleading or confusing consumers will not be tolerated. This is a binding regulatory directive, and LASCOPA will apply the full force of the law against any defaulting organisation,” Solebo stated.
He explained that any modification that affects a product’s identity, formulation, ingredients, composition, quality, quantity, packaging, labelling, brand presentation or any other feature capable of influencing a consumer’s purchasing decision must be disclosed before the product is introduced into the market.
Solebo also called on manufacturers and businesses to adopt a uniform position for displaying the Date of Production (DP), Best Before (BB), Expiry Date (ED) and Batch Numbers (BN) on their products.
He also urged businesses to standardise the placement of measurements, including grams (g), kilograms (kg), millilitres (ml) and litres (L), on product packaging.
According to him, standardising the placement of such information would make it easier for consumers to locate and verify important product details before making purchases.
Solebo said failure to comply with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 and the Lagos State Consumer Law 2025 (as amended) constitutes a regulatory breach and would attract enforcement measures, including administrative penalties and other sanctions provided by law.
The LASCOPA boss stressed that providing accurate product information is a legal requirement and not a matter left to the discretion of businesses.
He said all labels, packaging, advertisements and other descriptions presented to consumers must accurately reflect the products being offered for sale.
Solebo also urged consumers to be vigilant by checking product labels carefully and comparing available information before making purchases.
He urged consumers to carefully look out for any misleading information or undisclosed changes through LASCOPA’s complaint channels.
He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring confidence in the marketplace, stressing that businesses operating in Lagos State must uphold transparency, accountability and fair trading practices.
