The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Tuesday sealed two facilities in separate parts of Lagos over alleged breaches of environmental regulations relating to wastewater disposal.

The enforcement action, disclosed in a statement obtained from the X (formerly Twitter) page of the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, followed what authorities described as persistent non-compliance with established sanitation standards.

According to the agency, the Balmoral Convention Centre was sealed for “indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the public drain via the use of a pumping machine,” as well as “unattended wastewater spillage from a blocked sewage chamber causing public nuisance and foul smell.”

In a related action, the office shut down Foodies Restaurant over what it described as repeated violations.

The agency said the facility discharged “untreated wastewater containing large deposits of fat and oil into public drains,” which it noted had “clogged the drains and caused foul smell, environmental nuisance and pollution, despite several warnings.”

The Lagos State Government reiterated its stance on environmental compliance, warning that enforcement would be sustained.

Authorities stressed that “residents and property managers must adhere strictly to proper wastewater management practices,” adding that “any individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations will be meted with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws.”
