Kwara orders oxygen cylinders for children’s hospital

The Kwara State Government has directed the immediate delivery of the preferred oxygen cylinder sizes to the Children’s Specialist Hospital, Centre Igboro, Ilorin, following concerns over difficulties in oxygen supply and delivery at the facility.
The directive was issued by the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Abdulraheem Malik, during a routine monitoring and inspection visit to the hospital as part of efforts to assess service delivery and identify areas requiring improvement across government-owned health facilities in the state.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Board’s Press Secretary, Adamu Sabi, the inspection focused on service delivery, staff performance, patient care, facilities and the general condition of the hospital.
The statement said the areas inspected included ventilation at the Emergency Paediatric Unit, power supply, water reticulation, availability of drugs and consumables, as well as general space management within the facility.
Malik said regular monitoring was necessary to enable the board to identify challenges affecting healthcare delivery and ensure that government hospitals provided safe and effective services to patients.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that our hospitals provide safe, effective and patient-centred care. We will continue to monitor our facilities, identify areas requiring improvement and work with the management and staff to address them,” Malik said.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Mosunmola Folorunsho, reportedly raised concerns over the supply of oxygen cylinders in different sizes, explaining that the situation created operational difficulties in delivering oxygen to patients.
Responding to the concern, Malik directed the Engineering and Development Projects Department of the Board to supply the hospital with its preferred oxygen cylinder size going forward.
The Board said the intervention was aimed at improving efficiency and ensuring the timely delivery of oxygen to patients requiring the essential medical support.
Malik also assured the hospital management that observations made during the inspection would be reviewed and appropriate measures taken to address identified challenges within the Board’s capacity.
The Executive Secretary commended the management and staff of the hospital for their commitment to providing quality healthcare to children.
He urged the workers to maintain professionalism, discipline and compassion in the discharge of their duties, while stressing the need for judicious use of government resources.
Folorunsho, in her remarks, commended the Executive Secretary and the Board for consistently prioritising the welfare of healthcare workers and patients.
She also praised the Board for maintaining regular monitoring and oversight of government health facilities across Kwara State.
