Former University of Kansas basketball player Lagerald Vick has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in Tennessee following his Saturday, July 11, arrest.
Vick, 29, was arrested for his alleged role in a July 4 incident that occurred in his Memphis home, in which the former NCAA player is accused of allegedly shooting a man in the back during an altercation.
Vick was also charged with using a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
The man told police that he and Vick got into a “verbal confrontation” that evening, when he noticed that Vick had a handgun tucked under his armpit. When the man turned and ran away, he claims Vick shot him.
Vick was identified as the alleged shooter in a photo lineup after the victim gave his first name to authorities, according to documents obtained by Us Weekly.
Vick’s arraignment, originally scheduled for Monday, July 13, was delayed to a date yet to be determined. Bail was set at $1.5 million with a bail review scheduled for Tuesday, July 14.
The former Jayhawk was a member of the Kansas basketball team from 2015 to 2019, playing a key role on their 2018 squad that advanced to the Final Four. He averaged 12.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game that season, scoring in double figures in every postseason game until Kansas’ season-ending loss to Villanova.
The next year, Vick returned and was having the best statistical season of his career until he was forced to step away from the team in February for an undisclosed reason.
“Lagerald has some personal matters that require his immediate attention, and he will be taking a leave of absence from our team,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said at the time. “During this time, we will respect Lagerald’s privacy. There is no timetable for his return.”
Lagerald’s mother, La La Vick, told The Kansas City Star at the time that he was returning home to deal with a family matter.
“We need him here for a couple of weeks,” she said. “I need him. There’s a lot going on. It’ll work out.”

Lagerald went on to play professionally in six countries before ending his career in New Zealand in 2024.
During Lagerald’s freshman season, he was subject to a Title IX investigation for allegedly punching a female student in the arm multiple times and kicking her in the face. He was never charged.
Lagerald was also arrested earlier this year for allegedly breaking into an ex-girlfriend’s home and committing theft. He is due in court related to that case on July 30.
