The Kaduna State Police Command has ordered a full-scale investigation into officers captured in a viral video circulating on social media, allegedly showing them extorting money from motorists and cyclists during a stop-and-search operation in a suburb of Millennium City.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan, said in a statement on Tuesday that the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, directed that the officers involved be identified and invited for investigation, with those found culpable to be sanctioned appropriately.
“The Command wishes to clarify that routine roadblocks and stop-and-search operations has been curtailed , except where there is credible intelligence on the movement of criminals, arms, or other prohibited items.
“The Command, however, notes that the route in the video has previously been used by criminal elements, it’s a suburb of millennium city. It was along the same route that Police operatives previously recovered 20 AK-47 rifles,” the statement partly read.
Hassan stressed that no officer is permitted to use legitimate security duties as an avenue for extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct, and that those found guilty would face severe disciplinary and legal action.
In the statement, the CP also commended members of the public for their vigilance and urged them to continue reporting unprofessional conduct by police officers.
Reacting to the video on Wednesday, an Instagram user, #almu.stapha0012 wrote, “Come to bypass and see something…extorting tricyclist every goddamn day and they are fully dressed.” While #edmund_onoriode said, “#nigeriapoliceforce this shenanigans by your men happen all over the country.”
#vivianokugo2024 posted, “It’s happening everywhere in Nigeria; my dad experienced it just last week .” As #sussy_lords added, “No matter how much they increase police salary in Nigeria, they will do this because they are used to it.”
#kingdozi_ commented, “Always talking investigation, what’s there to investigate in a video like this? We have hundreds of this setup spread across the country right now.”
The Kaduna State Police Command said it remains committed to professional policing, accountability and the protection of the rights and safety of all residents of the state.
