Julian Alvarez’s agent has claimed “no one has contacted us” while being quizzed on a sensational cross-city move to Real Madrid.
The Atletico Madrid star has attracted plenty of attention ahead of this summer with La Liga rivals Barcelona and newly crowned Premier League champions Arsenal both heavily linked with the Argentine.
Alvarez has continued to be a leading light for Atletico since making his move from Manchester City two years ago and scored 20 times last term. Despite Diego Simeone’s side being regulars in the Champions League, talk of his striker moving on will not ease up.
Real president Florentino Perez sent the rumour mill into overdrive last week when he claimed he would make a £130million offer for an unnamed player, but talked up the excitement it would generate. Alvarez has been one of the players suggested.
However, Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has calmed the idea that anything is currently happening behind the scenes when quizzed on the links. He told Mundo Deportivo: “We have no information on the matter and no one has contacted us about it.”
Atletico have rarely seen their major players seek moves away. Antoine Griezmann, who joined Barcelona in 2019, was perhaps the last star to push for the exit door, albeit he would later return.
Simeone has been quizzed on the likelihood of his main striker looking to leave Atletico, but insists he has no answers and Alvarez has likely decided on his future. “This isn’t a question for me; it’s a question for Julian,” he said. “He’s old enough to know what he’s going to do, and I imagine he’s already made his decision.”

Barcelona are in the market for more firepower having let Robert Lewandowski leave once his contract expired. They have had their financial issues which could prove an issue, especially as they’ve just spent £70m on Anthony Gordon.

Arsenal too have been linked as their defeat in the Champions League final underlined the need for them to add more quality in the final third. Victor Gyokeres was signed last summer but the Swede proved inconsistent, despite scoring more than 20 times for the Gunners. The fact Arsenal may dip back into the market shows that they’re not totally sold or accept they need more quality in attack.
