Jellycat takes retail giants to High Court for ‘substantial’ damages
- Toy manufacturer Jellycat is suing retailers Next and Hamleys over accusations of copycat plushies.
- Jellycat claims its popular Amuseables range, which includes plush food items and everyday objects, has been copied by Next’s biscuit-shaped cushion and doorstop, and Hamleys’ various food and item plushies.
- The company is seeking “substantial” damages, arguing that the rival products are of “inferior quality” and could mislead customers into believing they are Jellycat items, damaging its reputation and sales.
- Next has denied the allegations, saying its products are not toys and are distinct from Jellycat’s, thus refuting claims of infringement, misrepresentation, or causing financial loss.
- Jellycat is also seeking injunctions to prevent Next and Hamleys from “passing off” their products as its own in the future, with Hamleys yet to file a defence.
