A new movie continuing the ‘thrilling’ adaptation is now streaming but fans have been warned.

Despite the final season of Prime Video’ s Jack Ryan series releasing back in 2023, a follow up has just landed on the service. The streamer has just dropped a sequel film, which sees former star of The Office John Krasinski reprise the title role.

Based on the novel series originally written by acclaimed author Tom Clancy, it’s not the first time his popular character has been given the movie treatment. Other titles to include the character include The Hunt For Red October, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears to name a few.

Big name stars such as Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck have all played the character previously. Krasinski first made his debut in the role for the Prime Video series Jack Ryan back in 2018.

It would go on to last for four seasons and boasts an overall rating of 80% on website Rotten Tomatoes. Now he’s back in a new film that has only just been made available.

According to its synopsis, Jack Ryan is reluctantly thrust back into the world of espionage when an international covert mission unravels a deadly conspiracy, forcing him to confront a rogue black-ops unit, and the clock is ticking.

Operating in real time with lives on the line and the threat escalating at every turn, Jack reunites with battle-tested CIA operative Mike November and former CIA boss James Greer, their combined experience the only edge they have against an enemy who knows their every move.

Backed by an unlikely new partner – razor-sharp MI6 officer Emma Marlowe – Jack and the team navigate a treacherous web of betrayal, facing a past they thought was long put to rest – making this the most personal, high-stakes mission any of them have ever faced.

Krasinski is reunited in the cast with The Wire actor Wendell Pierce, alongside House of Cards’ Michael Kelly. Joining them are Max Beesley and Sienna Miller.

First reviews have already begun to appear online for the film and share whether they think it is worth the time to check out. Unfortunately for long time fans, they could be left disappointed.

A critic for website Collider shared their views and suggested that while viewers might celebrate the show’s cast making a return to the world of Jack Ryan, the film ultimately falls short.

They explain: “That’s what makes Ghost War so frustrating, because it clearly knows what it has with this cast, but doesn’t know how to use them. With everyone’s charm and confidence making it watchable and, at most, a way to pass the time on a lazy afternoon.

“There is some comfort in seeing Jack, Greer, and Mike back in action. The film also has plenty of slick set pieces, but nostalgia also isn’t the same as momentum. Ghost War wants to feel like a bigger, sharper return for the franchise, but it too often settles for the safest version of itself.”

At the time of writing, Ghost War only has a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although this is only from less than a dozen reviews and so could change in the near future.

One reviewer noted there is some spectacle but not enough substance, claiming: “It trades the franchise’s mind for muscle, delivering an explosive finale that is thrilling to watch, but easy to forget.”

However someone else suggests long term fans of the series will actually be more likely to enjoy the feature length version. They penned: “Those with an unhealthy investment in Krasinski’s interpretation of Jack Ryan will be entertained, but the film only proves that there’s not much more to squeeze out of this franchise as it currently exists.”

Another agreed: “Jack Ryan: Ghost War, while it was an entertaining watch, is an empty-calorie piece of entertainment that is made for fans of the show more than anyone else.”

Meanwhile one review flat out tells viewers to avoid it. They warn: “John Krasinski returns in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, which is not worth watching, and falls short of the original entertaining series run, trading intelligence for a generic action spectacle.”

However, some fans who have already managed to watch the film seem more than impressed. As one shared their thoughts online: “Ghost War delivers everything you’d want from a modern spy-action thriller. John Krasinski absolutely nailed the role once again.

“The movie keeps you hooked from start to finish with high-stakes missions and action sequences. The visuals, tension, and overall vibe were top-notch. Easily one of the most entertaining action thrillers I’ve watched recently. For me, this was totally worth the hype.”
