Israel-Lebanon ceasefire extended by 45 days as Trump criticises Iran peace proposal
Trump says he threw away Iran proposal after reading first sentence
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend a ceasefire for an additional 45 days following talks in Washington that concluded on Friday.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced on X that “The 16 April cessation of hostilities will be extended by 45 days to enable further progress,” describing the discussions as “highly productive.”
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the war reached a stalemate as Donald Trump suggested he discarded Iran’s peace proposal.
Speaking aboard Air Force One returning from China, the US president claimed he had “looked at” Tehran’s response but “if I don’t like the first sentence I just throw it away.”
When pressed for details, he characterised the opening as “an unacceptable sentence,” adding: “If they have nuclear in any form, I don’t read the rest.” These remarks emerged after Iran’s foreign minister previously stated “no trust” in the Trump administration to broker a deal, despite the US seeking fresh negotiations.
