A spin-off of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! has been suddenly axed after more than a decade on screen.

The Australian version of the series, which launched in 2014 and was filmed in South Africa rather than the broadcaster’s own country, featured British stars including Freddie Flintoff and Geordie Shore TV stars Charlotte Crosby and Vicky Pattison.

The most recent series, which aired on Channel 10 earlier this year, was fronted by Robert Irwin and Julia Morris, saw radio presenter Concetta Caristo crowned Queen of the Jungle. But on Friday, it emerged that the series had been axed altogether.

A statement from Channel 10 said: “We have made the decision to rest I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2027 as we focus on offering our audience a range of content on all platforms. We look forward to working with Julia Morris and Robert Irwin on other projects.”

The format has been launched in various countries all around the world, including in the United States, where over the course of two seasons that aired in 2003 and 2009, celebrities such as Melissa Rivers, Caitlyn Jenner, in the days she was known as Bruce Jenner, as well as Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag competed.

Following the news, host Julia said: “I’m A Celebrity and our whole jungle family who make this show have made it the best working experience of my lifetime. I have loved every moment and will be forever grateful to Beverley and the whole team at Network 10 for not only believing in this show but nurturing it for 12 years. And to our jungle family watching from home, we love you.”

Robert, who is perhaps best known as the son of late Crocodile Hunter star Steve Irwin and recently won the US version of Strictly Come Dancing, said: “I want to express what an absolute privilege it has been to work on this show for the past three seasons.

“I grew up watching this show as so many Aussies do, so to be part of the fantastic team that make this series a reality felt like a dream come true.

“We have had the honour of sharing incredible stories and create a platform to shine a light on amazing charities that our celebrities have supported along the way. And to do it all alongside my co-host, and friend, Julia Morris made it a truly life-changing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

After the news broke, several UK-based fans took to social media to express their shock, and then sudden relief, after they initially thought that the British version had been cancelled. One wrote on X: “I cannot tell you the range of emotions I went through until I realised…”

Another said: “The way I read this thinking I’m a Celebrity fully got cancelled and got scared for a sec,” and a third wrote: “The way my heart just stopped.” But others were left just as disappointed as they realised the Australian version would not be returning to screens.

One said: “Wow wrong move channel 10 sorry very disappointing,” whilst another wrote: “That sucks I really enjoyed watching this show was funny and heart wrenching.”

Since Ant and Dec launched the ITV reality survival show in 2002, the programme has seen numerous celebrities live in less-than-luxurious conditions in the Australian jungle, bolstering the careers of stars like Katie Price, Kerry Katona and Scarlett Moffatt to name but a few.

Just recently, Adam Thomas infamously came to blows with Jimmy Bullard and David Haye on an explosive live final of I’m A Celebrity…South Africa, which was launched to give former campmates a second chance at the tough challenge show.

Other spin-offs over the years have included the ITV2 companion shows, which have been titled I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here…NOW! and Extra Camp over the years, but the most recent version has been titled Unpacked and is fronted by Kemi Rodgers, Joel Dommett and Sam Thompson.
