Parking rows are one of the most common causes of tension between neighbours, with many people urged to resolve issues through polite discussion. But when one homeowner tried exactly that, they were met with a response they never saw coming.

The retired resident shared their experience on Reddit, explaining how a neighbour had repeatedly parked in a way that obstructed access to their driveway. After deciding enough was enough, they approached them to discuss the issue. They explained: “They routinely overhang our dropped kerb driveway considerably, and we have issues with them inviting their guests to park across it entirely.

“We have a double drive way, which is being fully used, and they have a single driveway with a front garden. They insist they can park across our driveway because the dropped kerb overhangs their ‘property line,’ and worse yet, have started to complain and become hostile over it.”

Hoping to settle the dispute amicably, the Reddit user, known as Greedy-Tutor3824, said they knocked on the neighbour’s door to discuss the parking issue. Instead, they claimed their neighbour was “extremely rude” and dismissed all concerns.

“They insist that they can park there because of the ‘property line,’ which I’m quite certain is a non-factor,” they added. “They got hostile and started saying it was ‘inconsiderate’ when we parked across our own dropped kerb.

“This entire situation could be relieved if they would park a couple of feet back, not obstruct our dropped kerb, and would still leave them more than enough room to get their car off of the drive without issue.”

The discussion also prompted questions about what the law actually says about blocking a driveway. While many drivers assume it is automatically illegal, the rules can be more complicated depending on the circumstances.

According to guidance published by several local authorities, it is generally an offence to park across a dropped kerb in a way that prevents a resident from accessing the road from their driveway. Councils in areas where parking enforcement powers apply can often issue penalty charge notices to vehicles parked adjacent to dropped kerbs.

Salford City Council states that it is an offence to park across a dropped kerb where it obstructs a resident’s access to the public highway. The authority also notes that if a vehicle prevents somebody leaving their driveway entirely, the matter can become a police issue.

Newcastle City Council similarly explains that local authorities have powers to enforce dropped kerb restrictions without the need for road markings or signs. The council says the rules apply where lowered kerbs provide access between a driveway and the road.

Some councils also offer advisory white “H-bar” markings outside driveways to discourage obstruction. However, authorities stress that these markings are advisory and do not create parking restrictions by themselves.

Back on Reddit, many users believed the neighbour’s reaction was the most surprising part of the story. Several said a simple request to avoid blocking access should not have resulted in a confrontation.

Others suggested documenting future incidents and contacting the local authority if the issue continued. A number of commenters also warned against taking matters into your own hands, noting that damaging or obstructing another person’s vehicle could create further legal problems.
