A gunman is at large after a shooting at a hospital in Delaware, officials said.

An employee at Wilmington Hospital allegedly shot two co-workers at around 3.30pm EDT (8.30pm BST) on Tuesday, law enforcement officials told ABC News, adding that a manhunt is under way for the suspect. The condition of those injured is not yet known.

Police said the suspect is known to them and is understood to have been a temporary employee. The Wilmington Police Department said the scene remains active at the hospital, located in the 500 block of West 14th Street.

A text message was sent to hospital staff informing them that two people had been shot in the building’s basement, NBC10 reports. According to scanner audio obtained by the outlet, a dispatcher said one person had been shot in the neck and the other in the upper body.

The Wilmington Hospital campus is currently on lockdown, and the emergency department has been placed on diversion, according to a hospital spokesperson.

“We are working closely with law enforcement and taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our patients, caregivers and visitors,” the spokesperson wrote. “This is an active police investigation for a possible active shooter.”

Chris Coons, US Senator for Delaware, wrote on Facebook: “I’m closely monitoring reports of a shooting at Wilmington Hospital. I’m praying for everyone’s safety, including patients, health care workers, first responders, and law enforcement officers. Please continue to follow updates from local officials.”
