Talented singers from a Hamilton school were in perfect harmony as they earned an impressive placing at a closely-contested choir festival.

St Mark’s Primary finished as second runners-up at the west of Scotland regional final of the Scottish primary schools’ glee challenge after impressing judges when they took to the stage at Glasgow royal concert hall.

Members of school choir Noteorious performed Somebody to Love by Queen and set song I Lived by One Republic, and took the third spot after what judges in the nationwide competition called “one of their most challenging evenings of the season”.

Pupils from St Mark’s, on Sherry Drive in Meikle Earnock, reached the west of Scotland final after winning an earlier sectional heat at Hamilton Town House, where they had performed the Queen track and Viva La Vida by Coldplay.

Choirs were judged on vocal performance and musicality, movement and staging, teamwork, audience engagement and overall performance; and the theme of this year’s competition was “old school to new cool”, showcasing artists who have had hits in three different decades

The Hamilton singers shared the stage with Scots boyband Just The Brave; and were joined in performing at the Glasgow regional event by North Lanarkshire schools Our Lady & St Francis in Carfin, Riverbank Primary in Coatbridge and Airdrie primaries Golfhill and St David’s.

Glee challenge organisers The Frisson Foundation praised the “nine exceptional primary school choirs” who reached the west regional final, saying: “[It] was alive with music, colour, and extraordinary talent”; and added that more than 5600 singers from over 180 schools across Scotland have taken part this year.

The organisation’s founder, Bill Breckenridge, said: “The atmosphere was electric, with every choir showcasing months of dedication, teamwork, and creativity. Each choir delivered performances bursting with energy, musicality, and heart, a true celebration of what the glee challenge stands for.
