British intelligence agency GCHQ estimates that approximately 500,000 Russian troops have been killed since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, with drone warfare increasingly contributing to these casualties.
Russian military bloggers suggest that troops on certain Ukrainian frontline areas have a life expectancy of only 20 to 35 minutes due to the escalating drone attacks, a statistic cited by Oxford historian Peter Frankopan.
Despite Russia’s ‘meat-grinder’ strategy, which involves sending large numbers of troops to the frontline, the dominance of drones is leading to high Russian losses, with an estimated 30,000 monthly casualties and a ratio of eight Russian casualties for every one Ukrainian.
The widespread use of FPV drones has complicated Russia’s heavy artillery operations, prompting a shift towards infiltration strategies involving small groups of soldiers targeting weaker points on the Ukrainian frontline.
Ukraine has significantly enhanced its drone capabilities, with President Zelensky stating that over 80 per cent of Russian targets are destroyed by Ukrainian drones, and has intensified long-range strikes on Russian infrastructure, extending their reach to approximately 1,750km.
