Breakfast is often hailed as the most important meal of the day, giving us a much-needed energy boost to kick-start the morning. Now, one famous chef has revealed exactly what he eats after waking up.

According to All Recipes, Gordon Ramsay told the food magazine that he fuels up on oatmeal “the Ramsay way”, and it’s something he grew up eating. Not only that, health experts say it can lower bad cholesterol. At the time of the interview, the chef was training for an Ironman. This is a long-distance triathlon consisting of a swim, bike ride, and run – without stopping.

It was revealed that the Hell’s Kitchen star uses jumbo rolled oats with dates, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. He then uses a mix of milk and water to make the oatmeal.

You should simmer the spices, dates, and oats for around 15 minutes or until the oatmeal “reaches a creamy consistency”, Ramsay says. All Recipes recommends using plant-based milk or water to make a dairy-free or vegan version.

To mix it up a little if you get bored with the same old oatmeal, the Scottish chef suggests adding apple chunks while your oatmeal is cooking, and adding some fresh apples on top before serving.

Not only does it sound delicious, but it can really boost your health. According to Zoe, founded by Professor Tim Spector: “Oats contain a type of fibre called beta-glucan.

“It can help lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in your blood. This type is sometimes known as ‘bad’ cholesterol. Having less LDL cholesterol reduces your risk of heart disease.

“One randomised controlled trial found that consuming 3 grams of beta-glucan for 8 weeks lowered LDL cholesterol levels by around 15%. But a review of multiple studies found that a similar average dosage reduced levels by an average of just 4.2%.”

The experts also note that it can help control blood sugar levels, boost gut health and aid in weight loss. This is because the fibre found within oats can help you feel less hungry.
