Team Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia has won gold medal in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games, DAILY POST reports.

It was Team Nigeria’s fourth gold and second medal in the weightlifting event.

DAILY POST recalls Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed silver medal in the women’s 48kg on Sunday.

Umoafia produced a commanding performance from start to finish, recording 147kg in the snatch before matching the best 172kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a winning total of 319kg.

Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi settled for silver after amassing a total of 314kg, while Ezekiel Moses of Nauru claimed bronze after finishing with 310kg.

Team Nigeria has so far won eight medals at the Glasgow 2026 Games – four gold, and four silver medals.
