Scots heading off on their summer holidays via Scottish airports are being urged to check airport security rules carefully before travelling, as confusion continues over the UK’s changing liquid restrictions.
While some airports across the country have now scrapped the long-standing 100ml rule thanks to new CT scanner technology, several Scottish airports are still sticking with the old limits – meaning passengers could face delays at security or have items confiscated if they get caught out.
Under the traditional rules, travellers are only allowed to carry liquids in containers of up to 100ml through airport security, with all items placed in a clear plastic bag.
However, airports that have upgraded to advanced CT scanners can now allow passengers to keep liquids, laptops and tablets inside their hand luggage while going through security, helping speed up queues and ease congestion during the busy summer period.
In Scotland, Edinburgh Airport is among the airports to already relax the restrictions, meaning passengers can carry larger liquid containers in cabin bags.

But travellers flying from Aberdeen Airport, Glasgow Airport, Glasgow Prestwick Airport and Inverness Airport should still prepare for the existing 100ml restrictions currently in place.
Travel expert Neil Atkinson, Managing Director of Luxury Group Stay, warned many passengers may get caught out as they assume the rules are now the same for every airport.
He said: “Airport security has always been one of the most stressful parts of travelling, especially for families juggling toiletries, baby milk, sun cream and electronics.
“The new CT scanners are creating a much smoother experience for passengers. Not having to unpack liquids or worry about tiny bottles speeds everything up and removes a lot of unnecessary hassle before people even get on holiday.
“The biggest issue right now, though, is confusion. Travellers may assume the rules are the same everywhere, and they simply aren’t. Someone flying out from Heathrow could have a completely different experience to somebody departing from Manchester or Stansted.”
Neil also warned passengers to double-check rules for their return airport abroad, as many overseas airports still operate stricter liquid limits.

He added: “The safest approach is still to check the exact guidance for every airport you’re travelling through. It only takes one airport sticking with the old rules for items to be confiscated.”
