Lisa Kudrow admits she refuses to sing ‘Smelly Cat’ for fans
  • Friends star Lisa Kudrow has revealed on NPR’s Fresh Air radio show that whilst she is happy to interact with fans, she consistently refuses requests to sing her character Phoebe Buffay’s iconic song, “Smelly Cat”.
  • The 63-year-old actor emphasised that despite declining to perform the track, she has zero complaints about her time on the sitcom, fondly recalling the genuine mutual respect and working relationship shared with her co-stars.
  • First featured in the second-season episode “The One with the Baby on the Bus” alongside guest star Chrissie Hynde, “Smelly Cat” evolved into a major running gag and a defining trait of Phoebe’s persona.
  • Kudrow also disclosed that she initially tried to pitch herself for the role of Rachel Green after being cast as Phoebe, but producers refused as they had struggled to find the right actor for Phoebe and did not view her as a romantic lead.
  • Reflecting on her career trajectory, Kudrow noted that industry expectations were initially low during her time on Friends, but interest from agents surged after she starred in the comedy Analyze This.
