Five people have been killed and two injured following an explosion and fire at a defence company in South Korea, according to officials.

The incident took place on Monday at a workspace run by Hanwha Aerospace in the South Korean city of Daejeon, AP reports. The cause of the explosion has not yet been revealed.

Hanwha Aerospace is a government-designated security firm, and the affected site is believed to develop large-sized propellants and surface-to-surface weapons systems.

Local medical official Kim Ju-yeon said one of the two people injured by the blast is in critical condition. The identities of the two casualties have not yet been made public.
